Contemporary Art on the Up in Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh: The contemporary art scene is growing in Cambodia. Young artists are blooming and businesses are picking up on the trend, commissioning works by artists tapping into the country’s extensive cultural heritage. One art space in Phnom Penh has just held the city’s latest art exhibition.

Saturday saw the final day of the Penh Art Eexhibition at FT Gallery, with dozens of local and international artists showcasing their drawings, paintings and photos. Sustainable sculpture was also present with a few pieces made from reused materials.

EAC News spoke to FT Gallery’s General Manager, Quentin Conesa, who let us in on his perspective and the space’s purpose. He says FT is an art gallery with a focus on street art and contemporary art run by and for artists. For Quentin, what’s important is offering the people of Phnom Penh something fresh and new. The idea is to create experiences for the visitor, exposing them to something that will trigger some inner reflections and curiosity.

Many other smaller spaces are slowly opening in Phnom Penh, despite the pandemic, and we’re sure the contemporary art scene is here to stay.
